Unsurprisingly, The ‘Saints Row’ Reboot Did Not Do Well

You no doubt have heard of Embracer at this point, the studio buying up a massive collection of mid to large-size development including the likes of Gearbox, Crystal Dynamics, Eidos and Volition, who recently released a rebooted Saints Row game.

Now, Embracer is talking about how the game performed and they…do not sound terribly enthusiastic about it, even if they’re trying to spin some positive aspects out of the release.

Via Axios’ Stephen Totilo, we have some quotes from Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors speaking to investors about Saints Row:

“Personally I had hoped for a greater reception of the game. It’s been a very polarized view… There is a lot of things that could be said and details around it. I’m happy to see a lot of gamers and fans happy. At the same time I’m a bit sad to see also fans not happy. It’s difficult. I think we need to wait until the quarterly report in November to have more details”

Though ultimately, he thinks they’ll make money on it. The future of the franchise as a whole seems a bit up in the air after Saints Rows’ disappointing performance, however:

“Obviously you always want every installment of any IP to be greater than the last one, but what you do is…evaluate your position, the outcome…and there [are] hundreds of people engaged in this game in the group.. I still have a great trust in those people, and I am sure they will recommend things for the future.”

Saints Row is heading toward the end of 2022 as one of the worst-reviewed major games of the year, with its Metascore hovering in the low 60s, which is a place no game wants to be. That no doubt corresponded with lower-than-hoped-for sales. I’m not sure how truly “polarized” the reaction was, as Wingefors claims. I was actually in the camp that the game was better than critics were saying, but my enthusiasm waned the further I got into it, and the more I found that it was only getting less engaging in time, somehow. I maintain that it was a major mistake to do a total reset on all characters and completely disconnect it from the cast and world of the last four games.

Saints Row recently came up again in less than favorable light during the big GTA 6 leak, where people were commenting that even as a build that’s 2-3 years out from release, it looked better than Saints Row, which launched in a somewhat sloppy state. While Saints Row has always been a little brother to GTA, past games still reviewed and sold well, and that just wasn’t the case with this reboot, which clearly missed the mark. I’m not sure when we’ll see the series again after this, frankly.
